How to Achieve your Goals in Three Steps
Many people ask themselves “How do I grow?” -- As a person, professional, student, partner, and so
on. The answer to that question is answered by three other questions. May seem like more questions
than you started with but follow me.
“What do I want?”
Establishing a clear goal is fundamental to being successful. Without a goal there is no opportunity for
success. So first you need to figure out what you want: more money, a higher job title, improvement on
certain skills. Figure that out and then ask yourself…
“Why do I want the thing that I want?”
This is VERY important because sometimes the desires of our heart aren't always in the right place. Do
you want that manager position just to be in power over your old co-workers? That's probably not a
great motivation (unless they deserve it). Or do you want the position so you can take the company
into a more efficient and productive direction? Understanding this can give you the sufficient
motivation you need to move forward.
“How do I get what I want?”
Knowing this will bring life to your goals. Can you do the things that you want to do and are you actually
willing to do them? For example, say you want to get into engineering, but you have no math skills
whatsoever, do you give up? Maybe. Consider if your desire to be an engineer is worth the work it
would take you to get good at math and proceed from there. Answering “How” can usually illuminate
your next steps.
